Trader Thoughts #7 Meditation

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

Meditation can be a great tool for anyone but especially if you have a hard time concentrating, maybe you have ADD/ADHD or maybe even issues dealing with controlling your emotions. There are numerous benefits of meditating and even though it is mentioned a lot in trading rarely do we ever see it being really put to use. I personally try to meditation/get into a state of relaxation before every New York trading session. Some times this happens before our morning analysis stream or after.

Steps for Meditation:

First off we need to find a relaxing area of the house. I have a couch in my office that I use and make sure to let anyone in the house know I'm not to be disturbed. I personally enjoy a very dark room, as I use the black out curtains in my office to keep the light out.

Once you've found a relaxing area in the house it is now time to get started. I personally start off by counting backwards from 10 followed by a deep inhale and ex-hail. This normally takes a minute or so depending on how slow I count. There is no rush in this step, the whole idea is to calm your mind and breathing down for the next step.

After we have reached one it is time to then take 3 deep breaths and enter into our mediation. For all three deep breaths we need to in-hail count to 4 in our head and then ex-hail, do this for all 3 of our deep breaths.

Once this is complete it is time to then move on to the actual mediation. Unlike a normal mediation where we try to clear our mind the goal of this is to help prepare us for the day or help us improve on any area of trading we are currently working on.

For example if you are having confidence issue you would simply set a goal for being a confident trader. To then exercise said goal you will simply repeat over and over in your mind for the next 2-5 minutes " I am a confident trader" . This may sound like a very simple and even pointless exercise but it will help you grow your confidence and help your subconscious self work on your current goals.

Do this exercise for a week or two and you will begin to notice a difference. The key to this is to focus on the positive and not the negative. For example, if you are having issues controlling your anger while trading you would not say " I wont get angry" instead you would say something along the lines of"I am a positive trader" I am a calm trader" "I will/can control my emotions" . Remember we want positive reinforcement for our goals.

I have noticed that it helps to focus on one topic for a week or two and not jump around to a different topic/goal everyday.
